Sustainable Home: Take it Slow and Keep it Natural!
Hey there, it's almost summer time and with the sunny weather, some of us might be moving or buying a home for the first time. It's such an exciting time, not only because you get to have your own place, but also because you can put your own personal touch on it. Plus, it's a great opportunity to think about sustainability if you haven't fully embraced it yet. A sustainable home decor can give a timeless and classy feel to your interiors.
So, here are some great points to consider before you start your home decorating journey:
1. Take it slow
When I moved into my current house, I was very careful about deciding on the style I wanted to have. I wanted to live in the place for some time before making any decisions. We were living with our old furniture and decor while slowly figuring out the style that fit not only us but also the personality of the house. It can be tempting to change everything as soon as you move in, but trust me, we usually regret decisions we make in a rush.
2. Natural materials are the way to go
Natural materials have less impact on the planet than synthetic alternatives and can make your interiors calm and soothing. You have various options to choose from for every budget, such as cork, handmade paper, FSC-certified wood, metals like copper and brass, glass, organic natural textiles, ahimsa leather, and other plant-based leather alternatives. You can even choose upcycled or recycled options, making them more sustainable, affordable, and truly one-of-a-kind choices.
3. Less is more when it comes to home decor
It's true that less is more, but it's also important to invest in good quality items. There's a saying where I come from that goes, "You cry only once with a high-quality expensive item, but you cry many times with cheap low-quality item." Good quality items are long-term investments. They may be slightly more expensive than cheaper alternatives, but you'll end up buying them less frequently, so they'll cost you less in the long run. Plus, with so many sustainable home decor options available nowadays, it doesn't have to break the bank.
4. How can we forget plants
Plants are a great way to decorate your home effortlessly. Plus, if you're living in an apartment, it's an excellent way to bring nature in. They help purify the air and provide many health benefits.
5. It’s a journey, not a race
Finally, it’s important to remember that decorating your home is a process. You don’t have to have everything perfect right away, and in fact, leaving some spaces empty or unfinished can give you the opportunity to add pieces that reflect your life experiences and travels over time. Whether it’s a painting from a street market in Morocco or a beautiful artefact from an antique shop in London, adding personal touches to your decor can make your home feel even more special and unique.
So there you have it, folks! These are some great tips to keep in mind when decorating your home this summer. Remember, take your time, choose natural materials, invest in quality items, add some plants, and keep it personal. Happy decorating!
